Student support
Aims
The Association awards grants to students facing financial hardship on the basis of recommendations by the College Tutor.
Alumni Student Fund
Examples of funding for individual students:
- purchase of books (20% of expenditure)
- purchase of other educational materials (such as special computer software, sheet music, drawing office equipment and materials)
- travel for education where no other University and College funds are available
Typical Fund expenditure
- About 60 students annually benefit from grants, normally between £50 and £250
Source of funding:
- The fund is financed from the proceeds of the sale of merchandise, investment income and donations
Applying for support
- Students first apply for support to their College Tutors, who then forward their recommendations for approval by the Association
Other student financial support
- Annually, the Association awards at least one prize to final year undergraduates achieving the best University examination results in the College
- Student functions, including the May Ball, on an ad-hoc basis
Downing Gifts
Support the work of the Alumni Association by purchasing a special Downing gift. All profits from the sale of merchandise are donated to the Association's Alumni Student Fund, providing grants to Downing students facing financial hardship.
