Music at Downing

There is a strong music tradition in College, and a new organ was installed in the Chapel in 2015.

The Music Room

The Music Room provides an elegant venue for small recitals, and the piano's warm and expressive tone is well matched to these pleasant and comfortable surroundings. There is a collection of pianos at Downing, which includes a Kawai grand in the Music Room,  a Steinway grand in the Master's Lodge, a Yamaha grand in the Howard Building and a Reid-Sohn upright in the Chapel. These venues are all used for concerts and recitals of various kinds. The instruments are also often available for students to use for practice.

The Downing College Music Society

The Downing College Music Society (DCMS) offers a full programme of events, including orchestral concerts, recitals featuring soloists and small ensembles, and jazz evenings in the Butterfield Bar.  Further details of forthcoming events can be found on the Downing College Music Society Facebook page and the College’s What’s on Musically monthly e-newsletter.

For details of choral services and other events, download the current Chapel term card on the College Chapel webpage.  More information on Downing College's music and drama facilities can be found here.
