Our work with schools
Downing College works extensively with schools to help students from all walks of life enter higher education. As part of the University's area link scheme for outreach, we work predominantly, but not exclusively, as the first point of contact for schools in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, including the communities of Plymouth, Torbay, Poole and Bournemouth. This includes:
Our annual Oxford and Cambridge Information Days, a series of half day conferences held in key locations across in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset for Year 12 students interested in applying to either university.
Individual School Residentials - chances for schools to bring Key Stage Four groups to Cambridge, for a one or two night stay. We work with schools to create a bespoke timetable, linking in with the school curriculum. These usually take place in September, April or July
School visits and talks - our dedicated school and college liaison officer regularly visits schools in our link areas. In 2017-2018, we visited 16 schools, delivered 28 talks, and spoke to 1131 students.
We also put on events in Cambridge open to students from across the UK. Past examples include our English and MML Taster Day, and our BAME Conferences, aimed at supporting black, asian and minority ethnic students
