Downing Fellow and Bye-Fellow receive grant for research project

Downing Fellow Dr Bonnie Lander Johnson and Bye-Fellow Dr Claudia Tobin have been awarded an IAA grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to share their research on sanctuary gardens with public audiences in London and Cambridge.

Events include talks about the history and literature of sanctuary, writing workshops in psychiatrist and author Sue Stuart-Smith’s sanctuary garden, and an exhibition at the Garden Museum in London.

The events culminate with a day of engagement with art, gardening and literature at Downing College as part of the Cambridge Festival. Members of the public will have a chance to hear about the research into the history of sanctuaries as religious, political and medical sanctuary, and to visit the Downing Gardens Team’s Wellbeing Garden and the exhibition in The Heong Gallery.

“I’m very pleased that we have another chance to share with the public our research as part of the Plant Life group,” said Dr Lander Johnson.

“This Sanctuary Gardens project is a development of the Saffron work which resulted in an online exhibition.”
