Downing celebrates outstanding set of results

Yesterday evening the College celebrated a year of extraordinary achievement by Downing students at the annual Scholars’ Dinner.

This year 97 current students gained a First or Distinction in their exam results, of whom 55 students became Scholars for the first time, as well as one member of our pioneering cohort of Foundation year students. An additional 43 recently graduated students gained a First or Distinction in their studies.

The combined examination results of our Undergraduate body rank the College as third overall in the University and eighth by the number of Firsts attained. In addition, eight Downing students topped their class list Tripos, achieving the highest results in the entire University in their examinations. This is the best set of fully examined results by the College in living memory.

Before celebrating together over dinner, our Scholars gathered in the Assembly Room to sign the Scholars’ book, in a ceremony presided over by the Master, Vice-Master, Senior Tutor and Praelector.

The Master, Professor Graham Virgo said, “The results reflect the hard work and dedication of students and a step change in the College’s investment in Fellowship teaching and student wellbeing. It was a privilege to congratulate each Scholar on their exceptional achievement and to celebrate with them their academic success.”

The Senior Tutor, Professor Guy Williams said, “All students work very hard and it is wonderful to see this paying off for them. Those involved in their teaching and support are very proud of them. We were particularly pleased, not only with the exceptional attainment of the Scholars, but also with such a high proportion attaining the good honours pass which will be a good foundation for whatever their next challenge will be. “

On behalf of all at Downing College, we offer our sincere congratulations to all our Scholars. We are immensely proud of their achievements.
