Welcome back to new Clinical Medics
We look forward to welcoming you back to College for your introductory course the week commencing Monday 11 September.
As the method of study and rhythm of the academic year is somewhat different to the life you have known as an undergraduate at Downing, it is hoped that the following information will outline what you need to know about being a Clinical Medicine student here. If you have any further questions, please contact the Graduate Admissions Officer.
Please ensure you visit the Tutorial and Admissions Office in your introductory week (from Monday 11 September to Friday 15 September) to register and do the following:
- If you have a student loan, you will need to bring either your passport or photo driving licence (GB) as an identity check to initiate your payment.
- A new University Card has been ordered as a replacement for your existing card and will be exchanged on production of your old card.
- There will be several critical forms for you to complete during Registration, as well as collect important information.
Director of Studies
Your College Director of Studies, who is responsible for overseeing your academic studies for Clinical Medicine at Downing is Mr Justin Davies, a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon and Clinical Director of Digestive Diseases at Addenbrooke's. Mr Davies has arranged to meet with you as a cohort for the first time on Thursday 14 September in Room R4 at 6.00 pm in College. You will be emailed further details about this meeting on Friday 1 September.
Your Graduate Tutor at Downing College will be Dr Jay Stock. Like Undergraduate Tutors, Graduate Tutors are also responsible for your general welfare and will represent you in official contacts with the central administration of the University. As a new graduate student, you are only required to meet Dr Stock at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term 2017. Please sign-up for an appointment time on the Downing Tutorial Site for Students, which opens on Moodle from Wednesday 27 September onwards.
It is in your best interest to inform Dr Stock as soon as any illness or difficulty occurs which is likely to affect study or examination performance. In such cases, Tutors help to deal with health or other personal problems and are in a position to assist with special needs or disabilities. Requests to take examinations under special conditions can be arranged by the Tutor. Dr Stock is contactable at any time throughout the year by email. He can be seen by appointment and such appointments should be made via email. In an emergency contact the Tutorial & Admissions Office (+44 (0)1223 334811) or the Porters’ Lodge out of office hours (+44 (0)1223 334800).
Do I need to register with the College Nurse as a new student?
Students who have already seen the College Nurse as an undergraduate do not need to re-register. As usual, during clinic times you can come and see the College Nurse without an appointment. Alternatively, outside of clinic times please contact the College Nurse to schedule an appointment.
As a new graduate student, do I need to matriculate?
As you have already matriculated as an undergraduate student, you do not need to matriculate again, but you are most welcome to attend the Matriculation events on Tuesday 10 October. Please complete the Matriculation Dinner Form to indicate your attendance and any special dietary requirements by Tuesday 26 September.
Do I need a new academic gown?
You are now entitled to wear a BA gown which differs to the undergraduate gown you have been used to wearing. New gowns may be purchased through outfitters in the city (approximate cost £95 for a BA gown). However, it is possible to purchase good quality ex-rental BA gowns through the College, at a reduced price of £47, by completing this order form. Gowns are supplied on a strictly first-come, first-served basis, as supplies are limited. Gowns ordered by Monday 4 September are to be collected from Ryder & Amies between Monday 11 September and Wednesday 13 September (inclusive) during their hours of business.
