New laboratories named after Downing Emeritus Fellow

New laboratories at the Department of Psychology have been named after Downing Emeritus Fellow in Mental Health and Neuropsychiatry, Professor Trevor Robbins.

The opening took place on 28 February 2024, with many of Professor Robbins' friends and colleagues in attendance, including The Master of Downing, Professor Graham Virgo.

Professor Robbins has had a long association with the department, having been its Head from 2002 until 2017. He was previously appointed as Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience in 1997 and served as Chair of Experimental Psychology.

The new laboratories are for Cognitive Neuroscience, an area that represents the interaction of neuroscience (study of the brain) with cognition and behaviour, using techniques such as brain imaging and electroencephalography (EEG) with scalp electrodes, both in healthy volunteers and in individuals with brain damage.

The new facility will be for general use within the department and includes a virtual reality set-up for behavioural testing and computational methods.

Professor Robbins said: "As the first Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University, I was greatly honoured to have had this splendid new facility linked to my name - and also delighted that there are now several appointments in this area of ‘Brain and Mind’ research to make best use of it.”
