BBC's Orla Guerin in conversation for this year's Richmond Lecture

The annual Richmond Lecture took on a different shape this year. Rather than the usual lecture, this year saw the BBC's Senior International Correspondent Orla Guerin in conversation with Downing alumnus and BBC editor Simon Wilson.

A multi-award-winning veteran foreign correspondent, Orla talked about her time in journalism, from her career beginnings in Dublin to her almost 30 years of working for the BBC. She spoke of her experience in covering conflicts from the frontline, including ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Other topics discussed included the groundwork put into the risk management and security preparation ahead of covering events in war zones, as well as the effects of the internet and social media on news reporting and on the journalism industry as a whole.

After the talk, she answered questions from the audience, and then met students, staff and alumni at a reception in the Grace Howard Room.

Professor Graham Virgo, Master of Downing, said: "Orla Guerin in conversation with Simon Wilson was thought-provoking, humbling and inspiring. Downing College is very grateful that Orla came to the College to share her insights and experiences."
