Named in honour of the renowned aeronautical engineer and former Head of Department Professor William Austyn Mair, the Austyn Mair Society serves as Downing's prestigious engineering society. Through professional events, formal swaps, and social gatherings, it fosters a welcoming community where members can build lasting friendships, share knowledge, and grow both personally and professionally.

Most notably, the society hosts the Engineers Dinner after the final exams in Easter term, providing a memorable opportunity for members to celebrate their achievements together. The society also hosts prominent speakers from a variety of engineering fields and levels of experience to engage and inspire.

All students studying Engineering and Chemical Engineering are automatically members of the Society.
