Colin Birss read Natural Sciences (Physical) at Downing, graduating in 1986 with first-class honours in Metallurgy and Materials. He went on to work for Arthur Andersen for two years. He then undertook the Law conversion course at City University and was Called to the Bar in 1990. His practice as a Barrister was in Intellectual Property law. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 2008 and was appointed a High Court Judge in 2013. He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in January 2021.
