Why work for Downing College?

This is an opportunity for a highly effective senior leader to play a vital part in the development of a leading academic institution. The successful candidate will join a thriving, welcoming community and will be expected to provide outstanding strategic and operational leadership.

The Governing Body looks to the Senior Bursar for advice on long-term financial strategy and planning. The Senior Bursar is expected to see to the long-term financial well-being of the College, balancing the demands of financial prudence with the core educational purposes of teaching and research. Supported by a strong, long-standing team, the Senior Bursar has oversight of the entire non-academic functioning of the College, including: HR, IT, Health & Safety and the continued success of the College’s thriving conference business. Moreover, the Senior Bursar plays a full role in the formal and informal meetings of the Governing Body and will support, as required, the work of others, such as the Development office.

The successful candidate will be a bright, highly articulate, confident senior leader, capable of inspiring, motivating and managing the College’s staff and engaging effectively with both the Fellowship and students. It is not required that the Senior Bursar be a qualified accountant, however they will bring extensive experience of overseeing budgets and developing strategic financial plans. The successful candidate will understand servant leadership and how to build consensus, but be a seasoned and confident leader in their own right.
