University Taster Day (Year 9)

This event is open to Year 9 students who are invited to Downing College.  Students attending the event will have the opportunity to find out about the University of Cambridge and explore what opportunities are available for them in the future. The day will run from 10am until 3pm and will be packed with activities to explore studying outside the classroom. The students will have the chance to take part in academic taster sessions, covering a range of core subjects and inspiring topics.  The aim is to enable students to discover and understand the subjects they are interested in. An example programme is detailed below:

10:00 am – Arrival & Registration

10:15am – What is Higher Education? Including Cambridge explained and

10:45am – Thinking about your Future Workshop

11:30am – College Tour

12:00pm – Lunch

12:50pm – Academic Session

1:50pm - Break

2:00pm – New Academic Taster Session

2:45pm – Evaluations & Question Time

3:00pm – Finish

To register your interest in attending please complete an online form.

This is an event for teachers to bring along a group of students. Please note there is a maximum of 10 students per school and all students will need to meet the following criteria.

To attend this events the students must meet the essential criteria below:

  • Currently in year 9 at a state school
  • Interested in studying at Cambridge or have the potential capability to study at Cambridge

The students must also meet one of the following criteria:

  • No parental history of higher education
  • Currently or previously living under local authority care
  • Eligible or receiving Free School Meals (currently or in the previous six years)
  • In receipt of pupil premium
  • Disability - either physical, mental or learning
  • Ethnicity:
  • Ethnicity: BME students
  • A young carer for a family member
  • POLAR 4 classification 1 or 2 (this is based on the students postcode)
  • IMD deciles 1-3
