University Taster Day (Year 10 and 11)

Due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), Downing College has postponed all of our upcoming outreach events. If you are interested in attending this event or others in the future, please fill out this form and we will email you when we have a new date and are taking applications again.


Year 10 and 11 students are invited to Downing College, Cambridge for a fun and informative two days about the University. Students can expect two days packed with opportunities to learn and explore studying outside the classroom. Topics will include Oxbridge explained, student life and academic taster sessions. The students will leave the event with further insight into what Higher Education has to offer and their route to Cambridge. An example programme is detailed below:

Day One:

3:00 pm – Arrival & Registration

3:30pm – HE & Oxbridge Explained

4:30pm – College Tour

5:00pm – Thinking about your Future & Options Post-16

6:00pm – Dinner

7:00pm – Student Life

7:30pm – Evening Activity

9:00pm – End of Day One

Day Two:

8:00am – Breakfast

9:00am – Cambridge City Tour

10:00am – Academic Taster Session

11:00am – Budgeting & Student Finance Explained

11:30am – Cambridge Admissions Explained

12:00pm – Lunch

1:00pm – Q&A Session

1:30pm – End of Taster Day

How to apply

This is an event for teachers to bring along a group of students. Please note there is a maximum of 8 students and 2 staff members per school, due to accommodation constraints.

To attend this events the students must meet the essential criteria below:

  • Currently in year 10 or 11 at a state school
  • Interested in studying at Cambridge or have the potential capability to study at Cambridge

The students must also meet one of the following criteria:

  • No parental history of higher education
  • Currently or previously living under local authority care
  • Eligible or receiving Free School Meals (currently or in the previous six years)
  • In receipt of pupil premium
  • Disability - either physical, mental or learning
  • Ethnicity: BME students
  • A young carer for a family member
  • POLAR 4 classification 1 or 2 (this is based on the students postcode)
  • IMD deciles 1-3
