Downing welcomes new Fellow

On Friday 20 March, Dr Maria-Andreea Filip was officially admitted to the Downing College Fellowship by the Master, Professor Graham Virgo, at a ceremony in the Grace Howard Room in the presence of other Downing Fellows.

Based at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, Dr Filip joins the College as the new Kim and Julianna Silverman Research Fellow.

Her research interests are in employing quantum computers to solve theoretical chemistry problems, in particular electronic structure. She focuses on developing algorithms which combine stochastic computation with ground state projection techniques and quantum computing to efficiently find the energy levels of molecules.

She is also interested in high-accuracy conventional quantum chemistry techniques, including Quantum Monte Carlo methods and trans-correlation theory.

Dr Filip said: "I am honoured to be admitted to the fellowship of Downing College, and I look forward to working with and contributing to this community."

Professor Graham Virgo KC (Hon), Master of Downing, said: "I am delighted to welcome Dr Maria-Andreea Filip as a Fellow of the College. As the latest Kim and Julianna Silverman Research Fellow, she joins a distinguished group of scientists who have held this fellowship."
