Downing alumna Dame Caroline Wilson DCMG appointed as UK Ambassador to the European Union

Congratulations to Downing alumna and Honorary Fellow, Dame Caroline Wilson DCMG (1989), who has been appointed as UK Ambassador to the European Union.

Caroline, who read Law at Downing, has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. She most recently served as the British Ambassador to China, a role she held since 2020. Her extensive experience in international affairs includes previous postings as the Europe Director at the Foreign Office and a tenure as the British Consul-General to Hong Kong and Macao.

"As I embark on a new diplomatic challenge as Ambassador to the European Union, I am once again grateful to Downing College and the University of Cambridge for equipping me foundationally," said Dame Caroline Wilson DCMG.

"A firm grasp of the legal construct of the European Union (the European Communities when I first studied it in the early 1990s!) is vital if the UK is to successfully navigate the post Brexit regulatory landscape. It used to be a key element in the Law Tripos. I am also glad to return to the heart of discussions in Europe, at such a pivotal time for our collective security and prosperity.”

Professor Graham Virgo KC (Hon), Master, said: "We are thrilled to see Caroline appointed to such a critical role at the heart of UK-EU relations. We take great pride in seeing one of our alumnae leading the way on the global stage and wish her every success in Brussels."
