Undergraduate Matriculation - Tuesday 8 October

Matriculation is an important ceremony because it marks the formal admission of each new undergraduate to the College and University.  No other engagement may interfere with these arrangements.  By taking up your place at Cambridge you agree that you will sign the following declaration on Matriculation, which refers to the Statutes and Ordinances of the University in force from time to time.  The current Statutes and Ordinances can be found on the University website.  At the ceremony all new undergraduate students must sign the University Matriculation form and the College Matriculation form.  An example of the declarations you are required to make is provided below for your reference.

'I promise to observe the Statutes and Ordinances of the University as far as they concern me, and to pay due respect and obedience to the Chancellor and other Officers of the University.'

'I agree to abide by the Rules and Regulations of Downing College as described in the College Statutes and on the Downing College website.'

Before and after the ceremony there are further events which serve to welcome you to the College.

It is the College custom to have a group photograph of all new undergraduates.  This will be taken at 1.00 pm in the main court of the College.  Everyone is required to assemble there punctually at 12.45 pm.  Dress code is as follows, which is defined without reference to considerations of gender identity or expression:

  • Suit
  • Long trousers or a skirt
  • Shirt or blouse (shirts should be collared and should be worn with a tie or cravat)
  • Dress
  • Smart shoes
  • Jeans or shorts are not allowed

Downing College undergraduate gowns must be worn.  Undergraduate Freshers are required to attend the Howard Building Auditorium immediately following the photograph, dressed as above, to be formally welcomed to the College and introduced to key College Officers and Departments.  You will also receive important information on the Matriculation ceremony, welfare, safety and security.

Lafayette Photography will be offering individual portraits in the quadrangle (Chapel if wet) from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm.  To book an individual photograph, please contact Lafayette directly on (01223) 815195.
