BARBARA HEPWORTH
DIVIDED CIRCLE

15 November 2019 – 2 February 2020

This exhibition has formed in response to Barbara Hepworth’s large-scale bronze sculpture Two Forms (Divided Circle) 1969, an edition of which is on loan to Downing College from the Hepworth Estate. Visible in the College grounds through the Gallery windows, this sculpture will stand in dialogue with a Gallery display of significant works made by Hepworth during the later stages of her career.

Hepworth’s sculptural language of asymmetry, dualities, movement and spirituality will be explored, as well as the centrality of the human form and scale to the works. These ideas are especially meaningful when seen in the context of Hepworth’s life during the late-1960s and in relation to the rapidly changing social-political landscape of that time.

By exploring these qualities in her work, the exhibition will suggest that there is much to learn today from Hepworth’s human-centred approach to sculpture.
