Downing College is home to a diverse community of people
of different faiths, and many who are not practising members of any
religion. However, because of the Anglican history of Cambridge
University, the College contains a beautiful Chapel. The Chapel is a
focus for Christian spirituality, prayer, worship, preaching and
friendship and it also has a central place in the musical life of the
College. There is an excellent Chapel Choir,
which sings at two services a week. All are very welcome to attend any
of the Chapel's services,
or to visit it during the day to enjoy its peaceful atmosphere.
The Chapel is kept quiet from 12 to 2 pm each day, and after 9 pm most
evenings. At other times, it is available for musicians who wish to
practise. Members of College may borrow the key from the Porters if the
Chapel is locked.
The Chapel is run by the Chaplain,
who is a minister in the Church of England. He is assisted by an
ecumenical team of student Chapel Wardens who come from a wide range of
denominations and Christian traditions. Recent preachers have included
Methodist and Baptist ministers, a Roman Catholic monk and a Russian
Orthodox priest.
The Chaplain and the Chapel Wardens aim to make the Chapel a welcoming
and friendly place where Christians can learn from God and from each
other, and where all can explore the varied treasures of Christian
faith and spirituality.
