The Nurse's Clinic is located in room 5 on O staircase in the main court. Health-related information is available for students, both inside and outside the Nurse's Clinic.

Edel Gower is the College Nurse for Downing College and is available to provide assessment and treatment of minor illness and injury and emotional support to both graduates and undergraduates throughout the year. 

The College Nurse is able to help students with a wide range of medical and psychological difficulties. As well as providing nursing care and carrying out dressings during clinic, visits can be made to students in their rooms where appropriate.  Other provisions include:

  • removal of sutures
  • health information
  • relaxation
  • avoiding stress
  • signposting to others

Make an appointment

The College Nurse has an appointment system, with a variety of appointments available each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during Term.  If you wish to book an appointment, please sign-up on the Downing College Tutorial Site for Students on Moodle via the College Nurse Registration and Appointments page. 

Please note, it will only be possible to book an appointment up to 2 weeks in advance. 

During NPR, drop in sessions, where no appointment is necessary, are only available on Tuesday (1pm to 2pm). 

Outside of NPR, the College Nurse will operate drop in sessions only (Monday to Thursday) and appointments will not be necessary.

Urgent help or emergencies

Call the College Nurse directly on 01223 334817 if you need to be seen urgently within clinic.

If the College Nurse is not available, you can contact your GP on 111, or in emergencies call 999.

The nearest medical practice to Downing College is the Lensfield Road Medical Practice.  You can call them on 01223 651020.

All College Porters are trained first aiders.  You can call the Porters' Lodge for advice on 34800.

College Physiotherapy Clinic: Room 05

The College Nurse refers students to the College Physiotherapist if appropriate and depending on need.

Physiotherapy appointments are held in College most weeks during Term: dates and times are posted in the e-newsletter and on notices around College. Appointments are 40 minutes long and free of charge, although there is a £40 charge for missed appointments.

Allergies

Students who have had a serious allergic reaction or who have food allergies are asked to provide information about their allergies on their Health Questionnaire.  In some cases, it will be necessary for the College Nurse to discuss allergies with the student before their arrival in the College, or within the first 48 hours of their arrival.

First aid

An accident form must be completed for any injury requiring first aid which is sustained on College property. Forms are available from the Porters’ Lodge.

Confidentiality and Records

The College Nurse exercises her duty of confidentiality to all students and respects their right to privacy. Information shared with the College Nurse is kept strictly confidential; as with all health care environments, sharing information without consent would only occur in exceptional circumstances. Student health records are stored and processed in accord with current health and personal data protection regulations.
