Dame Elisabeth Frink, Larger Than Life

THE HEONG GALLERY PRESENTS WORKS FROM A MAJOR PRIVATE COLLECTION OF ELISABETH FRINK’S WORK

Dame Elisabeth Frink (1930-1993) was an English sculptor and printmaker who became a household name due to her monumental bronzes that typified the anxieties of an age. Instantly recognised for their power and prescience, Frink’s works began to be collected by institutions like Tate even before she graduated from the Chelsea School of Art in 1953.

Her public acclaim was based not only on inclusion in museum collections, but also on commissions for public and religious spaces (Manchester Airport, Coventry Cathedral, Liverpool Catholic Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral and others) and works installed on the grounds of country estates (notably, Chatsworth, Sherborne House and Ragley Hall).

Dame Elisabeth Frink: Larger Than Life (4 November 2017 – 6 February 2018) will showcase works from a leading private collection of the artist’s work. Archetypal bronzes such as Mirage I & II (1969), Goggled Head II (teeth) (1969), Tribute I (1975) and Judas (1963) will be on show alongside multiple bird figures, small figure groups, drawings and prints from the Green Man series, her last major print series before her untimely death.

As a counterpoint to the works in the collection, Frink’s lifelong engagement with religious sculpture will be represented by the larger-than-life Walking Madonna (1981), on loan from the Ingram Collection.
