Graduate Matriculation - Tuesday 10 October
Matriculation is an important ceremony because it marks the formal admission of each new graduate to the College and University. No other engagement may interfere with these arrangements. By taking up your place at Cambridge you agree that you will sign the following declaration on Matriculation, which refers to the Statutes and Ordinances of the University in force from time to time. The current Statutes and Ordinances can be found on the University website. At the ceremony all new graduate students must sign the University Matriculation form and the College Matriculation form. An example of the declarations you are required to make is provided below for your reference.
'I promise to observe the Statutes and Ordinances of the University as far as they concern me, and to pay due respect and obedience to the Chancellor and other Officers of the University.'
'I agree to abide by the Rules and Regulations of Downing College as described in the College Statutes and on the Downing College website.'
Before and after the ceremony there are further events which serve to welcome you to the College.
It is the College custom to have a group photograph of all new graduates. This will be taken at 1.00 pm in the main court of the College. Everyone is required to assemble there punctually at 12.45 pm. Dress code is smart; men are requested to wear a jacket and tie, women are requested to wear a suitable equivalent. A University of Cambridge gown must be worn. New graduate students are required to attend the Howard Lecture Theatre immediately following the photograph, dressed as above, to be formally welcomed to the College by the Senior Tutor, to receive information on the Matriculation ceremony from the Praelector and to be given talks on welfare, safety and security.
Lafayette Photography will be offering individual portraits in the main court of the College (Chapel if wet) from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm. To book an individual photograph, please contact Lafayette directly on (01223) 815195.
The Matriculation ceremony will take place in the West Lodge (E staircase). You should only arrive at the time given to you at Registration on Saturday 30 September.
Please note, if you have already matriculated as an undergraduate at Downing, you do not need to matriculate again, but you are very welcome to attend the group photograph and Matriculation Dinner.
The Matriculation Dinner for new graduates will be held at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 10 October in the College Hall, preceded by a Reception at 7.00 pm in the Grace Howard Room. Dress code is as above. Please complete and return the Matriculation Dinner Form to the Internal Events Coordinator by Tuesday 26 September at the latest indicating your attendance and any special dietary requirements.
