Downing College’s early Black Cantabs

A new archive exhibition for Black History Month celebrates Downing College’s early black students, sharing some of their stories brought to light during research in support of the Black Cantabs Research Society. The exhibition includes photographs of one of the College’s earliest identified black students, Edmund Léon Auguste, who won the first ever St Lucia Scholarship 100 years ago this year, coming to Downing to study Medicine.

The exhibition is located in the Maitland Robinson Library, Downing College.

Access by appointment only (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during Archive opening hours) – please contact the College Archivist, Jenny Ulph (archivist@dow.cam.ac.uk / 01223 762905) to arrange an appointment to visit.
