The College invites applications for election to a Research Fellowship each year, with subjects rotated on a four year cycle as follows:

The Fellowship is open to graduates of any university with no age limit, but is intended to support those at an early stage in their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to a candidate who has recently completed a PhD or is close to completion. Applications from postdoctoral candidates already in paid employment within the University are welcomed. Remuneration figures are reviewed annually and will be adjusted in the light of any grant or stipend which the Fellow may receive from other sources. Research Fellows are entitled to become a member of the University Pension Scheme (USS) and the College makes a financial contribution to this scheme.

The College expects Research Fellows to pursue full-time research but they are also encouraged to undertake supervision (small group teaching) of undergraduates, which is paid for separately, up to a maximum of six hours per week. It is expected that Downing College will have first claim on a Research Fellow’s services in this regard. As members of the Governing Body, Research Fellows are expected to attend Governing Body Meetings, which normally take place eight times each year. Research Fellows may also be invited to become members of other College Committees and it is expected that they will take part generally in the governance and communal life of Downing.
