The objectives of the Association, which have not changed since its origin, are:
- to keep alumni in touch with one another and the College,
- to facilitate united action to help the College,
- to publish an annual report and news of interest to members,
- to hold an annual meeting and dinner.
Apart from its social activities, the Association provides incentives and support to current students. Each year, it awards at least one special prize to the Downing undergraduate in his or her final year achieving the best University examination result in the College. In some years such prizes have been awarded to as many as four students with indistinguishably excellent results. The Association also makes grants to needy undergraduates for the purchase of books and other educational media, and provides travel grants to enable post-graduates to attend conferences.
