Because of the large number of applications to the University for graduate places for 2010, it has been necessary to suspend the normal provision of the option of College–owned or College–managed accommodation to those students, new to Cambridge, who have been confirmed for admission and who have applied for single accommodation by 31 July. Colleges will continue to offer such accommodation where that is possible and to offer help and advice, and the University Accommodation Service will continue to assist wherever possible.
Applicants are reminded that, as explained in the Graduate Prospectus, if they decline the offer of a College place there is no certainty that they will receive an alternative offer.
Downing has flourished since its foundation over 200 years ago. Its sixteen-acre grounds and splendid neo-classical buildings offer a uniquely spacious and tranquil haven in the centre of Cambridge, close to all the central University amenities. Downing is a friendly and informal community which encourages its students to strive for academic excellence. Membership of our graduate body is both a cosmopolitan and intellectually enriching experience. We admit students on a full-time or part-time basis for all of the University’s graduate courses but with a preference for research students working towards the PhD.
Studying for a degree at Downing is a rewarding experience, with the dual benefits of the University’s outstanding teaching and research facilities and the excellence and variety of the College environment. The membership of Downing College comprises around 250 graduate students, 400 undergraduates and 50 Fellows. Each year the graduate intake is about 80 students with about two thirds researching for a PhD or the one-year MPhil, and the remainder working for advanced taught courses such as the PGCE or as Clinical Medical and Veterinary students. Admission to the College is open to all suitably qualified candidates on an equal opportunities basis. Is there an Open Day or opportunity for me to visit Downing College? We do not hold a specific Open Day for postgraduates, however please check our Open Days page for details of our general College Open Days. You are welcome to visit the College at any time and self-guided tour leaflets are available from the Porters’ Lodge. For further information please contact the Graduate Secretary, telephone 01223 334826. |
